In a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world, approaching situations with empathy allows leaders to have appropriate, but caring conversations. It also allows them to be in tune with employees’ well-being and create a workplace culture that is inclusive and supportive. For customers, empathy shows corporate responsibility and focuses on building human-centered relationships.
In a Kaiser Family Foundation survey, 45% of Americans agreed that the global pandemic has harmed their mental health with an additional 19% saying it is having a “major impact.” SHRM research says 22% of employees report often having trouble concentrating on work tasks and 35% of employees report having reduced energy. When a few tired days become chronic stress and exhaustion, burnout has set in and employees disconnect from their work.
If change is an inevitability we must contend with in life and at work, then it stands to reason that embracing change and navigating it well will improve both the journey and outcomes.
As John F Kennedy said, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”
Remote work is here to stay. There are many contributing factors why someone might work remotely, including the capabilities of technology, potential cost savings for both the company and employee with reduced overhead and commuting costs, and an increased desire to achieve work-life balance. In addition, we don’t want to overlook the impact Covid had in promoting a remote environment at the time. But while there can be benefits with remote workers, it can also introduce a unique set of issues that can negatively impact an organization. To make remote work successful, companies need to know how to keep remote employees engaged and working to their best potential. Let’s explore why that’s difficult and what to do about it.
