Burnley Borough Council is based in a thriving, lively town, which is home to world-class companies; a town with a proud and famous history, which now has its eyes firmly set on the future. Burnley’s defining characteristic is its diversity–found in its multicultural communities, its economy, its stunning country side, and its heritage.‘Building a Better Burnley’and bringing regeneration to the area is the council’s main focus.
Ensuring that middle management within the council has greater clarity about their roles. Empowering them to be more confident decision makers and leaders, enabling them to have a strategic purpose in helping the council achieve its long term goals.
A bespoke programme was launched with 16 middle managers attending the inaugural sessions. Designed to increase the managers confidence in themselves and to help them coach their own teams of people to be better decision makers and have belief in their abilities, the programme now successfully run 3 times. It is also being rolled out to the senio rmanagement team including the Chief Executive and all Heads of Services, to create a common language, shared vision and values throughout the whole council, resulting in Engaged, Inspired and Motivated Leaders.
18 months into the training and another survey was done revealing a vast improvement in career satisfaction from the middle management group. Through the survey the participants teams revealed that they now had more trust in their managers and faith in their capabilities. Middle managers are now more visible within the council and the team. They are engaged, innovative and proactive in making decisions. IiP assessment in August 09 highlighted that the programme has reinforced the behaviours which are key to effective management.
